With an important architectural and cultural heritage, Mons has been the cultural capital of Wallonia since 2002, and was also awarded the status of European Capital of Culture in 2015.

Mons has 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites, i.e. the belfry and the Neolithic Flint Mines of Spiennes, as well as 1 UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, i.e., the Doudou.

Mons is located 60 km south-west of Brussels, about 240 km north-east of Paris, 75 km east of Lille and about 180 km west of Aachen.
